About EAN-13 and UPC-A barcodes

EAN-13 and UPC-A are the linear ("1D") barcodes behind almost every retail product on the shelf today. Both encode a GTIN — EAN-13 carries the full 13-digit form, UPC-A carries the 12-digit form used across North America — as a pattern of black bars and white spaces a checkout scanner reads directly, with no server or app involved. This tool detects which symbology to draw purely from the length of the GTIN you type: 12 digits renders as UPC-A, 13 digits renders as EAN-13.

GTIN-8 (EAN-8) and GTIN-14 (ITF-14, used on shipping cartons rather than retail packaging) aren't supported by this tool yet.

How do I add a barcode to my product packaging?

EAN-13 or UPC-A — which one do I need?

It depends on which GTIN your product was allocated, not on your choice: a 12-digit GTIN (GTIN-12) prints as UPC-A, a 13-digit GTIN (GTIN-13) prints as EAN-13. This tool detects which one from the length of what you type and renders the matching symbology automatically.

What size should I print it at?

GS1's General Specifications allow EAN-13 and UPC-A to be printed anywhere from 80% to 200% of nominal size (about 37.29mm × 25.93mm for EAN-13 at 100%). Smaller packaging can go down to 80%; a shelf-edge label with more room can go larger. Whatever you choose, always test a printed sample with a real scanner before a full print run.

Do I still need this once GS1 Sunrise 2027 happens?

Yes — Sunrise 2027 is about retailers being ready to scan 2D barcodes as well, not about switching off 1D. Existing EAN-13/UPC-A barcodes keep working at checkout, and most small brands will print both a 1D barcode and a GS1 Digital Link QR side by side through the transition.
